Mawtini

by Nagham Kilani, documentary 23 min. 2016,
Production of Shashat Women Festival.

Director Nagham Kilani approaches the very complex subject of identities in Mawtini. “I grow up in one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the West Bank - Nablus, and this is the story of two of its communities - Balata Refugee Camp and Nablus Old City.” She shot during Eid Al-Futr, with Nablus joyfully decorated. She wonders if it will be a city for all of its inhabitants as well after the Eid, or will it breakdown into little “homelands” and “identities,” which are called by different names, “refugee,” “Old City inhabitant,” “peasant,” etc. “All that is left for us is to add these names to our Israeli IDs with their different colors of green, blue and orange…”
